NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home Course

Cost:

$350.00 for individual

$300.00 per person for a group of 2-3 people

$250.00 per person for a group of 4-6 people

(Maximum classs size 6 people due to high volume of live fire excersizes)

This course is currently offered as a private class only. All students wishing to take this course must first pass the NRA Basic Pistol Course and the NRA Personal Protection Inside The Home Course. Contact instructor Dave Newman at 504-430-7409 for details on setting up a private class. This class takes a minimum of 14 hours and may scheduled over 2-4 days depending on group scheduling requirements. Students taking this class must be available for the shooting portion of the class during the middle of the week. We usually do the shooting portion of the class at Honey Island Swamp Range on days when the range is closed to mitigate liability factors.


NRA PPOH Course Goal: To develop in students the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective, responsible, and ethical use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home.


Lesson # 1 – Introduction to Concealed Carry Safety and the Defensive Mind set

The importance of carrying and using a pistol responsibly and ethically for personal protection outside the home.

How the three fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling apply when carrying or using a concealed pistol outside the home.

How the NRA rules for using and storing a gun apply when carrying or using a concealed pistol outside the home.

Special safety considerations that must be observed when carrying or using a concealed pistol outside the home.

The various techniques for storing a pistol safely outside the home.

The four levels of awareness and how they apply to concealed carry outside the home.


Lesson # 2 – Introduction to Self-Defense and Concealed Carry

The importance of mental preparation and developing the proper mind set for carrying and using a pistol for personal protection and facing a life-threatening encounter outside the home.

Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations outside the home.

The psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack.

The differences between having a firearm for personal protection in the home and carrying a pistol for personal protection outside the home.

Techniques for controlling and responding to a violent encounter outside the home.

The emotional, legal, and social aftermath of a defensive shooting outside the home.


Lesson # 3 – Legal Aspects of Concealed Carry and Self-Defense

Explain the general rights and restrictions under laws permitting the carrying of concealed pistols for self-defense.

State key legal provisions and restrictions pertaining to the use of deadly force outside the home.

Explain potential criminal and civil legal actions that may be taken subsequent to a defensive encounter outside the home.

Explain where the students may find detailed legal information for his or her specific jusrisdiction.

Lesson # 4 – Carry Modes and Concealment

identify the various pistol concealed carry modes and the benefits and limitations of each.

Explain the basic principles of pistol concealment as they relate to the carrying of a pistol for self-defense outside the home.


Lesson # 5 – Presenting the Pistol from Concealment

Explain and demonstrate the technique for safely presenting a concealed pistol and reholstering.


Lesson # 6 – Presentation, Position, and Movement

Present a concealed pistol and shoot targets in the center mass:

* After moving to a high barricade.

* Engaging two targets.

* Using aimed fire technique with the strong hand only.

* Using point shooting technique with two hands.

* Using point shooting technique with the strong hand only.


Lesson #7 - Special Shooting Techniques

Present a concealed pistol, conduct speed reloading, clear stoppages of their pistols and shoot targets in the center mass:

* Using hip shooting techniques wit the strong hand only ("speed rock")

* Moving rearward, stopping and shooting.

* From standing to kneeling behind a low barricade.

* From standing to squatting behind a low barricade.

* Moving to a low barricade, then kneeling or squatting.

* From sitting to standing.

* From standing, turning left 90 degrees to the target.

* From standing, turning right 90 degrees to the target.

* From standing, turning left 180 degrees to the target.

* From standing, turning right 180 degrees to the target.

* Engaging a target at extended range.

* Under low light conditions.


Lesson # 8 – Sport Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities

Identify organizations, associations, clubs, and businesses that may help hone, enhance, and expand personal protection skills.

Explain methods and precautions for dry-fire practice, including drawing from the holster.


Lesson # 9 – Course Review and Examination

Describe the programs, history and membership benefits of the NRA

Successfully complete the NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Course written examination.
